* Politics

The web site for the Democratic National Convention has been gooblebombed by some winguts. Story on Kos here. Just doing my part to try and get it back in the correct hands.

Actually, it looks like the offending site might have been removed already, but what the hell, I'll keep this post anyway.

Speaking of googlebombs, have I mentioned recently that George Bush is a miserable failure?

Morrissey to Bush: drop dead.

I hope this doesn't hurt Morrissey's record sales in the US. He just came out with a great new album.

I guess I picked a great week to be completely out of the loop and generally unable to catch the news. All this Reagan crap is sooo boring. Still, it's probably worth it, because it makes Bush look like even more of a chump.

* Reagan

This Billmon post on the Gip gets it right.

* Culture / Japan

Japan is heading for some serious demographic problems. This USA Today article discusses how Japanese people are having less sex, getting married less often, and just generally avoiding mingling between the sexes. Seems that relationships are just too messy.

* Humor / Economics

It's a rare day that I agree with Bill Safire, but I do agree with his proposal to Abolish the Penny. Did you know that the U.S. Mint churns out a billion pennies a month?
Where do they go? Two-thirds of them immediately drop out of circulation, into piggy banks or — as The Times's John Tierney noted five years ago — behind chair cushions or at the back of sock drawers next to your old tin-foil ball. Quarters and dimes circulate; pennies disappear because they are literally more trouble than they are worth.
Pennies are a waste of time and money.
